A man was found dead Friday morning at Katito Police Station in Nyakach Sub-County, Kisumu County.
According to a police signal sent out Friday morning the duty officers heard a commotion from the cells, prompting them to investigate.
The police officers then found a suspect brought in the previous evening by a local chief as a suspect in stock theft, had hanged himself using a vest tied to the grill of the cell door.
The suspect (name withheld until police inform kin) was booked under OB 09/13/06/2025 at 9:00am for the offence of stock theft.
The man was beyond resuscitation as he had succumbed to death by the time the officers arrived.
Detectives from the DCI Nyakach, Muhoroni and CSI officers from Kisumu visited and processed the scene.
The body of the deceased has been preserved awaiting a follow-up investigation by the Independent Police Oversight Authority (IPOA).
A similar incident occured last week at the Ukwala Police Station cells in Siaya County when the body of Joseph Otieno Oduor alias Sande, 26, was found hanging on a metal rod in the cells’ toilet.
Otieno was a defilement offender who had jumped bail and was re-arrested following the issuance of a warrant by a court in the area.
The family confirmed that the victim was suicidal and had attempted to take his life once in the past.
This incidences come at a time when the nation is grappling with the brutal death within police custody of teacher-cum-blogger Albert Omondi Ojwang.
Yesterday the OCS Central Police Station Samson Talaam was arrested in Eldoret and becomes the fourth person to be arrested as a suspect in the murder. Yet the nation is still skeptical that the real perpetrators of the offense are walking scott free while the small fry is apprehended.
Investigations are ongoing.
