President Dr William Samoei Ruto on Tuesday 15 July 2025 launched the Affordable Housing Internship Program at State House, Nairobi.
The program aims to absorb 4000 fresh graduates in the construction industry. While addressing participants President Ruto for the first time admitted the pressure he is facing as the navigates through hard economic times.
“Transforming a country does not come easy. It takes courage, foresight and commitment,” said the president.
He also posted on his X page that no matter what the obstacles he will continue with the reform program undeterred.
“We will keep pushing. Our vision for a better Kenya is irreversible.
The Affordable Housing Programme showcases the right steps we are taking in making our country prosperous for all.”
Although the program has met criticism from the working class (particularly on the legality of deductions towards the housing fund Levy) the long-term impact of the project is now becoming obvious.
With the absorption of the 4,000 fresh graduates in the building profession including architects, surveyors, engineers, construction managers, among others the target of creating jobs for 188,256 is now a reality.
The ripple effect is that the jobs will contribute to economic growth and stability in terms of security among the youth.
The decent houses will also improve living standards under conducive environment for the occupiers.
The program is expected to stimulate economic growth by providing affordable housing options, reducing agricultural land fragmentation, and increasing access to housing for low-income earners.
A total of 250,000 housing units are constructed through the program across the country, annually.
The Affordable Housing Internship Programme is designed to meet the practical needs of our housing agenda. It will absorb 4,000 fresh graduates in the building profession including architects, surveyors, engineers, construction managers, among others.
