Kaplong Girls High School Closed Indefinitely In Protests Over Amorous Teacher

Learning activities at Kaplong Girls High School have been halted indefinitely after students’ unrest over sexual abuse by a male teacher.

Claims emerged that the teacher groomed unsuspecting learners and allegedly engaged them in romantic affairs at the extra-county school situated in Sotik, Bomet County.

The assertions were made by a group of alumnae, some of whom narrated their supposed encounters with the educator involved.

Yet-to-be-verified excerpts of conversations between some of the victims and the teacher emerged online, indicating what were supposedly active teacher-student engagements outside the classroom.

According to reports, the students went on a rampage on Sunday, July 20, calling for action against the teacher.

With the situation getting out of hand, the principal, Madam Clara Mitei, sanctioned closure until further notice.

The students were ordered to leave the school immediately.

Meanwhile, the alumnae put blame on the school management for what they said was leniency towards the teacher out of the long duration he has stayed in the school. They called on state agencies, including the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), to intervene.

This comes only days after Basic Education Principal Secretary Julius Bitok declared that the government would not tolerate instances of sexual exploitation perpetrated against learners by their teachers.

He warned that the government would crack down on the predators leveraging their positions in the institutions of learning to abuse young children in their custody.

“As a government, we are not going to tolerate any behaviour where teachers or any other stakeholders in school take advantage of our children,’ he said.

The PS’s sentiments followed the accusations against an Alliance Girls High School teacher said to have been exploiting students sexually.

The alumnae of the school held protests outside the iconic school, prompting a reaction from the Education Ministry.
