As a rallying slogan, then Deputy President Dr William Samoei Ruto urged Kenyans to vote him in, in 2022 so that “hii siasa ya uwongo na utapeli must end”. Unwittingly, opposition leader Eugene Wamalwa kept repeating the same phrase during a live interview on K24 television.
The former Defence Cabinet Secretary launched a scathing attack on President William Ruto, declaring that the country must put an end to what he termed as “siasa ya uongo na utapeli” (politics of lies and deceit).
Speaking the live interview on K24tv Wamalwa argued that the only way to stop what he described as misleading politics was to ensure Ruto serves only one term in office.
Wamalwa’s remarks come at a time of rising political tension, with increasing criticism from various leaders over the government’s handling of key national issues.
According to Wamalwa, the current administration has perfected the art of promising what it cannot deliver, leaving ordinary citizens to suffer the consequences. “Hii siasa ya uongo na utapeli must end,” he asserted, adding that Kenyans deserve honest leadership that prioritizes the welfare of the people over political survival.
The former CS further accused the Kenya Kwanza administration of betraying the very citizens who entrusted them with power. He pointed out that the rising cost of living, coupled with controversial tax policies, had pushed many households into deeper poverty despite earlier promises of economic revival and job creation.
Wamalwa warned that unless Kenyans take decisive action in the next general election, the culture of deceitful politics would only get worse.
He concluded by calling on the opposition, civil society, and ordinary citizens to unite in holding the government accountable and pushing for genuine change. “If we want a better future for our children, Ruto must be a one-term President,” Wamalwa stressed. His comments are expected to spark further debate as the country edges closer to the 2027 elections, with the opposition seeking to capitalize on growing public discontent.
Without a clearly defined presidential candidate the opposition, however, appears to be mired in confusion of its own.
The favorite former Interior CS Fred Matiang’i dented his image by teaming up with Rigathi Gachagua whom Kenyans generally view as a worse option than President Ruto leading to an even weaker alliance attempting to dislodge the incumbent.
As for the Eugene Wamalwa paraphrasing of the same words spoken by president Ruto when he was campaigning against the Uhuru regime, it reveals that politicians are hewn from the same stock and most would lie without blinking an eye.
