The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) has reaffirmed its commitment to upholding media professionalism by supporting journalists in Siaya County through the Siaya Press Club. This initiative aims to ensure that local journalists operate in a professional, ethical, and enabling environment.
Under the watchful eye of Kenya News Agency’s Phillip Onyango the Siaya Press Club continues thriving as it provides local scribes with an enabling and professional environment to ply their trade.
Through capacity-building workshops, training sessions, and logistical support, MCK is working closely with the Siaya Press Club to strengthen the skills and welfare of media practitioners in the region. The collaboration also seeks to enhance the quality of local journalism, promote press freedom, and ensure adherence to the Council’s Code of Conduct for the Practice of Journalism in Kenya.
This partnership reflects the Council’s broader strategy to decentralize media development efforts and empower journalists at the grassroots level to serve their communities with accuracy, fairness, and integrity.
Through the Siaya Press Club the local scribes now have a dedicated workspace, thanks to MCK and other stakeholders, providing a professional and safe environment. And that’s’ not all; they even have an innovative table banking initiative for journalists’ financial empowerment!
Meanwhile, the Media Council of Kenya (MCK) is set to take its operations a notch higher following the gazettement of four Council members by the Cabinet Secretary for Information, Communications and the Digital Economy William Kabogo.
In a Gazette Notice dated 25 July 2025, veteran journalist Joseph Maina Muiruri was reappointed as Chairperson. A distinguished media leader, Mr Muiruri will steer the Council’s governance for another three years.
Ms Susan Karago, Mr Timothy Wanyonyi and Ms Tabitha Mutemi were also reappointed as board members, bolstering the Council’s ability to navigate Kenya’s dynamic media landscape. Mr Joram Temesi Mukani, the Secretary for Information and Broadcasting, has been appointed the Ministry representative in the MCK board.
This continuity ensures stability as the sector grapples with digitisation, AI and changing audience trends. The new development comes at a time when the revised Code of Conduct for Media Practice 2025 comes into effect, strengthening the Council’s efforts towards media professionalism and accountability in Kenya.
“These re-appointments reinforce our reforms, champion press freedom and enhance media professionalism and public trust,” said MCK CEO David Omwoyo.
The reappointed members’ three-year term began on 25 July 2025. The Gazette Notice also announced four board vacancies, to be filled per the Media Council Act, 2013.
