A light aircraft crashed on Thursday morning, August 7, in the Mwihoko area of Githurai 45, Kiambu County, igniting a massive fire and triggering a major emergency response.
Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic and chaos after the plane went down near Mwihoko Secondary School. The crash site quickly became engulfed in flames, with thick black smoke billowing into the sky. The fire spread rapidly to nearby houses, forcing residents into a desperate scramble to rescue those believed to be trapped inside.
Residents reported hearing screams from within the burning structures, prompting impromptu rescue efforts using buckets, jerrycans, and other makeshift tools to battle the blaze as they waited for emergency services.
Military personnel and police officers quickly arrived at the scene to cordon off the area and assist in crowd control as the situation escalated. Firefighters from Ruiru, backed by paramedics, managed to extinguish the inferno before it could cause further destruction.
Githurai 45 Sub-County Police Commander Maurice Odanga confirmed the incident and noted that, as of the latest update, no casualties or fatalities had been officially reported. However, authorities have launched a full investigation to determine the cause of the crash and assess its overall impact.
Desperate calls for additional fire engines and water tankers flooded local emergency lines, highlighting gaps in rapid response infrastructure in the area.
The Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) and other relevant agencies are expected to provide a comprehensive report in the coming days.
The crash has raised renewed concerns over flight safety and emergency preparedness in densely populated residential zones.
