A Rongo court has ordered the exhumation of a GSU officer buried within the grounds of the controversial St. Joseph Mission of Messiah in Africa, Rongo Sub-County.
Principal Magistrate Chrisphine Orwo directed that the remains of the late Dan Ayoo Obura be reburied at his ancestral home in Kochieng Village, Nyando Sub-County.
The officer’s widow, Lilian Atieno, must guide public health officials to the exact grave to avoid random digging. The exhumation will be conducted under the supervision of a public health officer, with security provided by the Kamagambo Police Station OCS. She will also be required to participate in the reburial rites.
Citing customary law, the court dismissed claims that Obura was buried in the church compound because he had sold his only land, calling the reasoning illogical.
The St. Joseph Mission of Messiah in Africa was shut down by the government months ago amid multiple allegations and had been declared a crime scene. Obura was buried there in March 2025.
Atieno says she plans to appeal the ruling.
