The Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) has unveiled a new Teacher Upgrade Programme targeting educators holding P1 or Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) certificates.
The initiative, KUCCPS says, is designed to help teachers transition to the Diploma in Primary Teacher Education (DPTE), a key qualification for delivering the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC). It is also expected to address the shortage of adequately trained teachers in lower levels of learning.
Speaking during the launch, KUCCPS Chief Executive Officer Dr. Agnes Mercy Wahome said the flexible programme will allow teachers to train either during the ongoing school term or in the November–December holiday.
“This upgrade programme will ensure that there are no shortages of teachers well prepared to deliver the CBC, especially in early learning,” Dr. Wahome said.
Eligibility
Applicants must:
Hold a P1 or ECDE certificate
Be registered with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC)
Select a preferred Teacher Training College (TTC) from the KUCCPS list
Application Window
Online applications opened on August 6 and will run on a rolling basis, with brief pauses for processing. The first deadline is August 20.
In a related announcement, KUCCPS has reopened applications for the September 2025 intake into Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions. The application period runs from August 8 to August 22.
To encourage more Kenyans to enrol, KUCCPS has slashed the application fee from KES 1,500 to KES 500.
Both programmes are accessible through KUCCPS’s online portals, and applicants are encouraged to submit their forms early to secure placement.
The dual announcements are part of the government’s broader push to improve the quality of teaching under the CBC and expand access to market-driven skills training through TVETs.
