A night of revelry turned tragic in Komenya Rabar, Alego Sub-County, Siaya, after a grisly road accident claimed one life and left another man injured.
According to eyewitness accounts, a vehicle carrying two friends veered off the road and plunged into a ditch near Komenya Rabar market. The deceased has been identified as Elly Ouma, while the survivor, John Anyuong, reportedly fled the scene soon after the crash despite sustaining injuries.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the two were intoxicated at the time of the accident, with witnesses alleging that they had been drinking prior to embarking on their journey from Ugenya where the deceased was undertaking some construction work back to Hawinga.
The incident has once again cast a grim spotlight on the dangers of drunk driving in Siaya County. Police have cautioned residents against mixing alcohol with driving, warning that such reckless behavior not only endangers the lives of motorists but also those of pedestrians and other road users.
“This is a tragic reminder that alcohol and driving do not mix. We urge all road users to exercise responsibility on the road,” said the area Assistant Chief.
As the community of Hawinga mourns the sudden loss of a young life, the message remains clear:
Don’t drink and drive.
Excessive alcohol destroys lives.
Always follow traffic rules — your life and that of others depends on it.
