Gor Mahia continued their steady start to the season with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over KCB at the Dandora Stadium on Sunday, ending the bankers’ perfect run and leapfrogging them on the league table.
A well-taken strike by Felix Oluoch in the 62nd minute was enough to separate the two sides, as K’Ogalo made it back-to-back league wins and climbed to third place with six points, ahead of KCB on goal difference.
The decisive moment came after an impressive run by new Ghanaian signing Ebenezer Adukwaw, who dazzled the KCB defence before setting up Oluoch for an easy tap-in. The forward’s movement and pace caused constant problems for Robert Matano’s men throughout the afternoon, with the visitors struggling to contain his flair and creativity.
Despite dominating much of the second half, Gor Mahia were wasteful in front of goal, missing several opportunities to extend their lead. However, their defensive discipline ensured that KCB rarely threatened, sealing a vital win for coach Charles Akonnor’s charges.
“We were solid and focused. The boys showed great character and teamwork,” Akonnor said after the match. “Adukwaw has been a great addition, and you can see how he is already fitting into our system.”
The win follows last weekend’s 2-0 triumph over Sofapaka, a result that appears to have reignited Gor Mahia’s title ambitions early in the campaign. The 21-time champions now head into the international break brimming with confidence.
Akonnor will, however, be keeping his fingers crossed as several of his key players — including goalkeeper Byrne Omondi, defenders Sylvester Owino and Michael Kibwage, and midfielders Alpha Onyango, Ben Stanley Omondi, and Austin Odhiambo — have all been called up to the Harambee Stars squad.
After the break, Gor Mahia are scheduled to face newly-promoted APs Bomet, a fixture that looks straightforward on paper but will still demand focus and precision if they are to maintain their momentum in the title race.
With their latest victory, K’Ogalo have sent a strong message to the rest of the league: the champions are beginning to find their rhythm once again.
