Residents of Yatta in Machakos County are reeling in shock after a police officer allegedly shot and killed his superior, the Officer Commanding Station (OCS), following a heated confrontation on Sunday evening.
According to reports, the tragic incident occurred within the Yatta Police Station compound after a disagreement between the two officers turned violent. Witnesses said the junior officer allegedly discharged fourteen bullets, killing the OCS on the spot before he was subdued and disarmed by fellow officers.
The body of the deceased was moved to Machakos Level Five Hospital Mortuary as investigations continue. Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have since launched a detailed probe to establish the motive behind the shocking act.
Security officials have described the incident as deeply disturbing, calling for urgent measures to address stress and mental health challenges within the National Police Service.
“This unfortunate event underscores the need for regular psychological evaluations and counselling for officers, especially those in high-pressure environments,” said a senior security official who spoke on condition of anonymity.
The suspect is currently in police custody as investigators record statements from witnesses and review the circumstances leading to the fatal confrontation.
The killing has sparked national debate on the mental well-being of law enforcement officers and the increasing cases of police-on-police violence. Many residents of Yatta expressed sorrow over the death of the OCS, describing him as a disciplined and dedicated officer who had earned respect from both his colleagues and the local community.
“This is a sad day for Yatta. The OCS was known for his professionalism and calm demeanor. It’s heartbreaking to lose him in such a manner,” said one resident.
The National Police Service has yet to issue an official statement on the incident, but senior officers have assured the public that justice will be served and that the circumstances surrounding the killing will be thoroughly investigated.
