Detectives have launched investigations into the mysterious death of a General Service Unit (GSU) officer whose body was discovered near the security fence surrounding the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) in Nairobi on Sunday evening.
According to police reports, Constable Nahashon Katumo, who was assigned to guard a section of the airport’s perimeter fence, was found dead in a pool of stagnant water near Kwa Mwenje Resort, a facility located adjacent to the JKIA boundary.
Authorities said the officer, who was in full uniform, had gone to the resort to recharge his mobile phone and was on his way back to his duty post when he was attacked by a lone assailant. Witnesses recounted that the suspect hit and pushed the officer into the pool, causing him to fall backward. The attacker is then said to have drowned him, leaving the officer helpless from injuries sustained during the scuffle.
Another GSU officer stationed nearby rushed to the scene after hearing a commotion but arrived moments too late — Constable Katumo had already succumbed. His G3 rifle was found next to his body, intact.
The colleague, however, managed to spot the fleeing suspect and pursued him. Police later confirmed that the suspect was arrested after a brief chase and sustained a head injury during the confrontation. He is currently hospitalized under police custody.
Senior police officers visited the scene as investigations commenced to determine the motive behind the brutal killing. The officer’s body was taken to the city mortuary pending an autopsy.
The airport perimeter fence, one of the most sensitive security installations in the country, is manned round-the-clock by armed GSU officers, underscoring the seriousness of the incident. Police have described the attack as isolated but say all angles — including personal and professional — are being examined.
Meanwhile, in separate incidents across the country, detectives are also probing two other murder cases reported in Meru and Nandi counties.
In Kunene, Tigania, Meru County, police recovered the body of Peter Giterere, 55, which appeared to have been dumped in a farm after being killed elsewhere. The deceased had visible injuries on the face, chest, and hands. Investigators described the location as a secondary scene and are pursuing leads on where the actual killing occurred.
Elsewhere in Mosoriot, Nandi County, a 60-year-old man identified as Nathan Ngesirei was found dead and naked by the roadside, with severe head injuries. A blood-stained piece of wood believed to be the murder weapon was recovered beside the body.
In all three cases, police say the motives remain unclear but confirm that investigations are ongoing to bring the perpetrators to justice.
