In a deeply moving eulogy that united the nation in grief and gratitude, President William Ruto on Wednesday paid glowing tribute to the late Right Honourable Raila Amollo Odinga, describing him as “a patriot, a pan-Africanist, and a global statesman whose legacy is written in the sands of time.”
Speaking with rare emotion and reverence, President Ruto said Kenya was “blessed to have been shaped by the will, leadership, and vision” of the veteran opposition leader, whose decades-long struggle for democracy transformed the political and constitutional landscape of the nation.
“With an unshakable faith in the values of our country and the character of our people, Hon Raila Odinga fought for our democracy and led the path towards our new constitutional order,” the President said, his voice heavy with respect.
Describing Raila as a peacemaker who always put country first, Ruto lauded his lifelong optimism, humility, and unrelenting belief in Kenya’s potential. “He bore the scars of struggle with dignity, knowing that freedom was not free and that truth often demands sacrifice,” he said.
A Statesman Beyond Politics
President Ruto’s eulogy transcended partisan boundaries, acknowledging Odinga as “the most significant leader of our democratic experiment.”
“He carried himself with courage and grace,” the President reflected. “His voice, sometimes fiery, sometimes soft, always echoed with purpose.”
The Head of State noted that Raila’s unwavering commitment to justice, inclusivity, and the rule of law defined not only his politics but his entire existence. “A quintessential progressive and reformer, he fought for the ideals of human rights, democracy, and economic opportunity for all until he breathed his last,” he added.
A Personal Loss
In a poignant personal reflection, President Ruto revealed the depth of his relationship with the late opposition leader, describing him as “a big brother, a mentor, a confidant, and a selfless patriot.”
“Every time I needed wise counsel, I turned to him time and again. He never once failed me—and told me the truth every time, even when the truth was hard,” Ruto said.
He expressed his family’s solidarity with the Odinga family during this difficult moment. “From my immediate family—Rachel and the children—we want to assure Mama Ida, Rosemary, Raila Junior, Winnie, Senator Oburu, and the entire Odinga family that we stand with them in this moment of grief.”
A Nation United in Mourning
The President concluded by urging Kenyans to come together in celebration of Odinga’s extraordinary life and contribution to the nation.
“He has left us a solid foundation built on the rock of faith. It is on that foundation that we shall find our way forward, inspired by his example, his legacy, and his optimism that our future is great,” Ruto affirmed.
As Kenya and the world mourn the passing of one of Africa’s towering figures, President Ruto’s tribute stood out not just as a presidential statement, but as a heartfelt farewell from one statesman to another—a moment that symbolized unity, respect, and the enduring power of shared history.
Raila Amollo Odinga (1945–2025) leaves behind a nation indebted to his vision, courage, and sacrifice. His journey—from prisoner to prime minister, from opposition leader to global icon—remains a beacon of hope for generations to come.
