Siaya County is preparing to roll out Walking Football, a fast-growing global wellness sport designed for senior citizens — marking a bold step toward structured, Japan-style mandatory exercise programs for ageing populations.
Japan, the world’s gold standard in elderly wellness, has long embraced compulsory community physical exercises for seniors, contributing to its record-breaking life expectancy. Now, Siaya is positioning itself to follow that model — and possibly lead Kenya in creating a healthier, more active elderly generation.
Powered by the Kenya Walking Football Federation (KWFF), the initiative blends sports, therapy, and social connection to tackle Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs), loneliness, and inactivity among older citizens.
Walking Football is more than a sport — it is a health revolution, a social movement, and a new chapter in dignified ageing.
KWFF’s mission echoes Japan’s nationally supported fitness culture by encouraging regular, structured physical activity for seniors under the mantra “Sports and Health.”
By working closely with medical practitioners and NCD specialists, KWFF intends to reduce health risks associated with ageing and help seniors stay mobile, strong, and socially engaged.
Walking Football is designed for:
The elderly
The differently abled
Men and women
Individuals who have never played sports before
The sport promotes light physical activity, mental wellness, and social interaction — helping seniors rebuild friendships, community connections, and daily motivation.
KWFF aims to collaborate with state actors to integrate Walking Football into wellness programs for senior government staff, improving productivity, morale, and long-term health outcomes.
The federation is onboarding non-state actors such as:
Social clubs
Churches
Community associations
Corporate wellness groups
The goal is to make Walking Football Kenya’s most successful inclusive sport for senior citizens.
KWFF intends to develop both male and female leagues that will compete:
Within Siaya
Across Kenya
Regionally
Across Africa
And eventually in international Walking Football tournaments
This is how Siaya can become the continental home of senior competitive Walking Football.
With NCDs rising and life expectancy stagnating, Siaya’s Walking Football rollout is more than a sports program — it is a public health breakthrough.
Just as Japan transformed national ageing through structured physical exercise, Siaya is setting the blueprint for Kenya to do the same.
Walking Football offers:
Safer physical activity
Injury-free exercise
Mental health benefits
Social interaction
Reduction in loneliness
Renewed purpose and joy for the elderly
Siaya could soon be celebrated as the first county in Kenya to adopt a Japan-inspired active ageing model — and the benefits may shape an entire generation.
Editor’s Note: the counties of Homabay, Migori and Nyamira are already experimenting with the model
