Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Secretary General Collins Oyuu has thrown down the gauntlet ahead of next year’s high-stakes union elections, boldly challenging his predecessor Wilson Sossion to enter the ring if he dares.
Fresh from a strategy meeting with officials from 25 KNUT branches in the Rift Valley, a charged Oyuu said he is “ready like yesterday” to defend his seat, boasting a track record he believes makes him nearly untouchable.
“Every Tom, Dick and Harry who wants to come to the arena — come baby, come! Come for your immediate downfall,” he declared to thunderous applause.
Speaking in what many interpreted as a subtle campaign rally—despite his insistence it wasn’t—Oyuu credited his administration with restoring calm, cohesion and strategic problem-solving within KNUT.
He praised his team’s collective strength, dismissing any notion of individual heroics:
“There is no solo operation in KNUT. The union has done this… we have done this… and we have succeeded together.”
According to Oyuu, support from members is so overwhelming that questioning it would amount to “doubting the obvious.”
In a unanimous declaration, the Rift Valley bloc pledged full backing for Oyuu’s 2025 bid, praising his cool-headed approach to negotiations with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) and his efforts to champion teachers’ welfare nationwide.
West Pokot Executive Secretary Etary Sembelio Martin said the region is solidly behind Oyuu and warned against disruption of the peace and stability the union is currently enjoying.
“We have resolved to stand with Oyuu and his team. Let teachers maintain stability by re-electing the current officials,” Martin stated.
Questions continue to swirl over whether former SG Wilson Sossion will attempt a comeback. Oyuu brushed off the speculation with confidence, insisting any challenger—Sossion included—is welcome to try.
For now, the Rift Valley endorsement strengthens Oyuu’s national momentum, signalling an intense, possibly explosive KNUT campaign season ahead.
