Moses Okoth Omondi — once the quiet technocrat steering Ugunja’s development machinery from the back office — is now the newly elected Member of Parliament for Ugunja Constituency. His emphatic victory in the November 27, 2025 by-election not only marks the rise of a seasoned grassroots administrator but also deepens the political footprint of his mentor, Energy and Petroleum Cabinet Secretary James Opiyo Wandayi.
Omondi, the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) flagbearer, clinched the seat left vacant after Wandayi’s Cabinet appointment, becoming only the second MP to serve Ugunja since its creation in 2013. His triumph has sparked a renewed wave of interest in a man who, until recently, was known mostly within Ugunja’s administrative corridors.
So — who exactly is Moses Okoth Omondi?
Unlike many politicians who emerge with polished national profiles, Moses Omondi’s story begins in the quiet rural stretches of Ligega Ward in Ugunja Constituency. Born and raised there, he is remembered as a soft-spoken, diligent boy with a grounded upbringing shaped by the daily realities of village life.
Early Schooling
His education journey began at Siror Primary School in North East Ugenya, a school known for churning out disciplined learners despite limited resources. Teachers who recall his years there describe him as disciplined and bright, often involved in school leadership and community activities.
Secondary School
He later joined Ambira High School, where he completed his Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE). Classmates remember him as a quiet but dependable student who preferred practical tasks to the limelight — a trait that would later define his administrative style.
Post-Secondary Education
After high school, Omondi’s post-secondary education is not publicly documented — a detail that continues to spark curiosity. What is clear, however, is that he transitioned early into public service and community work, quickly carving a niche as an effective development organizer.
Away from politics, Moses Omondi is known to be married to one wife and raising a young family. Described by residents as a devoted family man, he is often seen at local church events, community gatherings and social functions across Ugunja.
His commitment to privacy has kept his family out of the political spotlight, but constituents often point to this simplicity and humility as part of his appeal — a contrast to the flamboyance associated with many modern politicians.
For 13 years, Omondi worked as the Ugunja Constituency/NG-CDF Manager, serving directly under James Opiyo Wandayi. This period transformed him into the nerve centre of Ugunja’s development machinery:
- Coordinating schools and bursaries
- Supervising road upgrades and public works
- Managing community programs
- Overseeing funds and administration
- Mediating between the MP’s office and residents
This on-the-ground experience made him one of the most knowledgeable individuals about Ugunja’s development gaps, priorities and resources — and one of the most connected.
So when Wandayi moved to Cabinet, ODM saw continuity in Omondi.
On September 26, 2025, Omondi clinched the ODM ticket with 5,329 votes, trouncing his closest rivals Joseph Otieno Alur (2,789 votes) and Fredrick Z. Owino (1,336 votes).
His nomination quickly attracted heavyweight endorsements from:
- CS Opiyo Wandayi (his longtime boss and political anchor)
- Senator Oburu Odinga ODM Party leader
- Governor James Orengo
- Several Siaya MPs
Buoyed by ODM’s grassroots machinery, Omondi stormed the November 27 by-election with a decisive win — earning him bragging rights and reestablishing Ugunja as an ODM stronghold.
But Omondi’s victory wasn’t just about his competence.
Critics argue:
- He is “a continuation of Wandayi’s political hold” on Ugunja and wider Siaya.
- Wandayi’s influence was so strong that even senior figures like Orengo and Oburu had to align with him.
- The by-election has proven Wandayi’s ability to mobilize and impose his preferred candidate with precision.
This has raised a bigger question:
Can Wandayi now extend this influence beyond Ugunja — perhaps into the 2027 Siaya gubernatorial succession battle?
For now, Omondi’s win secures Wandayi’s dominance — but it also signals the arrival of a deeply rooted emerging politician.
With a young family, a humble background, and over a decade of hands-on administrative experience, Omondi enters Parliament with a clear plan:
- Accelerate stalled development projects
- Expand bursaries and school infrastructure programs
- Strengthen youth and women empowerment initiatives
- Improve rural roads and market access
- Deepen community involvement in decision-making
His message has been consistent:
“Finish what Wandayi started — and do it even better.”
From a boy in Ligega, to a student of Siror Primary and Ambira High School, to a trusted technocrat and finally MP-elect — Moses Okoth Omondi’s journey is a testament to homegrown leadership.
He is not a loud politician.
He is not a flamboyant one.
He is the quiet kind — the one who builds, listens and works.
And now, he steps into a role that will test whether humble beginnings and administrative experience can be transformed into bold national leadership.
For Ugunja, the story of Moses Omondi is just beginning.
