NAIROBI, Kenya – The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Party stands at a historic crossroads as its Central Management Committee convenes tomorrow in Kilifi for high-stakes talks that could redefine Kenyan politics ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Insiders reveal fierce behind-the-scenes lobbying to avert a damaging party split, with the agenda centering on a potential pre-election coalition with President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA).
Party leader Dr. Oburu Oginga has remained steadfast, rejecting appeals to postpone the meeting despite mounting pressure from senior figures. Sources say Oburu was infuriated by a parallel consultative gathering involving heavyweights like Siaya Governor James Orengo, ODM Secretary-General Edwin Sifuna, Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, Ruth Odinga, and veteran Amos Wako – a move seen as an attempt to defuse escalating internal tensions.
Even Suba North MP Millie Odhiambo’s last-ditch intervention failed to sway him, highlighting deep divisions in the party still reeling from the loss of its iconic founder, Raila Odinga.
In a symbolic bid for unity, National Chairperson Gladys Wanga held a private meeting with Ida Odinga – affectionately known as Mama Ida – as efforts intensify to heal rifts and honor Raila’s legacy.
Oburu has signaled clear intent: ODM is gearing up to form a dedicated negotiation team for structured talks with President Ruto. “Any alliance must be formal and negotiated properly,” he has insisted, prioritizing UDA in coalition discussions. Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi has thrown his weight behind the push, calling for swift action under the party constitution.
With factions pulling in opposite directions – some resisting closer ties to the Kenya Kwanza government amid accusations of infiltration at grassroots levels – the Kilifi retreat could either forge a game-changing grand coalition or trigger an irreversible fracture.
As Kenya’s political temperature rises, all eyes are on the Coast: Will ODM emerge united behind a Ruto deal, or will internal rebellion tear apart Raila’s once-unbreakable movement? The decisions made tomorrow could reshape the 2027 battlefield forever.
