In a dramatic and pivotal development in Kenyan politics today, the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party’s Central Management Committee (CMC) has directed Party Leader Dr. Oburu Oginga to immediately begin intense negotiations with political parties, starting with President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA), with the aim of forging a broad political alliance for the 2027 General Election.
The resolution was passed at a crucial session of the CMC convened in Vipingo Ridge, Kilifi County, where senior ODM officials gathered amid heightened internal tensions and lingering debate over the party’s post-Raila Odinga direction.
Dr. Oburu Oginga, acting Party Leader and Siaya Senator, read the formal resolution on behalf of the committee, which empowers him to take the lead on coalition discussions with other political parties as part of ODM’s strategic positioning ahead of the 2027 polls.
According to the committee’s directive:
Oburu is to kickstart negotiation talks immediately, with the UDA of President William Ruto prioritized as the first strategic partner.
These talks will be intense and consultative, aimed at exploring a binding political pact or coalition framework to maximize ODM’s influence and electoral prospects in 2027.

Results and recommendations from these negotiations are expected to be presented at the upcoming ODM Party National Delegates Convention (NDC).
The meeting was notable for the absence of ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna and Deputy Party Leader Godfrey Osotsi, both of whom missed the session — prompting a formal apology from the leadership.
Sifuna has previously been among the senior officials openly cautious or critical of formal political cooperation with the ruling UDA, warning that such a pact could undermine ODM’s identity.
The Vipingo meeting comes as ODM grapples with differing visions for its future following the passing of its long-serving leader Raila Odinga in October 2025, and amid a broader debate over whether to remain in government under the broad-based arrangement or pursue new political alignments for 2027.
In recent months, President Ruto has signaled openness to a formal alliance with ODM, suggesting a unified front heading into the 2027 elections, though both parties have yet to publicly conclude any binding agreement.

Today’s decision marks a strategic pivot that could reshape the Kenyan political landscape by potentially bringing together two of the country’s most significant political forces — ODM and UDA — under a negotiated coalition framework designed to enhance electoral competitiveness and national governance influence.
As negotiations commence, political observers say the next phase will involve heavy bargaining over 2027 election positioning, policy priorities, and power-sharing terms, with implications for regional balances and party loyalty dynamics across Kenya’s diverse electorate.
