President William Ruto has led national celebrations after Kenyan athletes delivered a commanding performance at the World Athletics Cross Country Championships 2026, declaring that the team had “demonstrated the greatness that defines Kenya.”
Kenya produced one of the most dominant displays in championship history, highlighted by a rare clean sweep of the podium in the U20 men’s race and a tenth consecutive senior women’s title through Agnes Jebet Ngetich’s extraordinary solo victory.
In the U20 men’s 8km race, Kenya secured an unprecedented 1-2-3-4 finish. Frankline Kibet claimed gold with a powerful finishing kick, followed by Emmanuel Kiprono in silver and Andrew Alamasi in bronze. Andrew Kiptoo rounded out the remarkable team performance with fourth place, underscoring the country’s unparalleled depth in junior distance running.
The senior women’s 10km race belonged entirely to world 10km record holder Agnes Jebet Ngetich, who broke away early and crossed the line in 31:28 — a staggering 42 seconds clear of the field. Her victory extended Kenya’s unbroken streak to ten straight world cross country titles in the category.
President Ruto praised the team in a statement: “Congratulations to our outstanding athletes for these remarkable performances… We celebrate a brilliant clean sweep in the U20 men’s final… We equally salute Agnes Ngetich for another historic victory… You have all demonstrated the greatness that defines Kenya. Well done.”
The results in Tallahassee reaffirmed Kenya’s status as the undisputed powerhouse of global cross country running, with athletes across age groups showcasing the endurance, tactical discipline, and team strength that have become the nation’s trademark. As celebrations continue across the country, the performances serve as inspiration for the next generation of Kenyan runners ready to carry the flag forward.
