Environmental education in Kenya has received a major boost after HACO Industries Kenya Limited entered a strategic partnership with Nation Media Group PLC to advance environmental literacy and youth stewardship in secondary schools.
The collaboration, formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), integrates HACO’s Green Learning Initiative with Nation Media Group’s long-running Newspapers in Education (NiE) programme. The partnership aims to deliver a practical, impact-driven learning model that blends classroom instruction with hands-on sustainability action and mentorship.
The pilot phase will roll out in 15 secondary schools nationwide, exposing learners to tailored environmental content while actively engaging them in recycling, greening, and stewardship activities.
Under the agreement, HACO will supply customized sustainability learning materials, support the establishment of student-led Green Guardian Clubs, and facilitate experiential programmes such as tree planting, waste reduction drives, and eco-challenges. Nation Media Group will deploy its NiE distribution network to deliver newspapers and learning resources to participating schools, while amplifying student achievements through its flagship platforms, including Daily Nation and Taifa Leo.
Beyond academic instruction, the initiative places strong emphasis on mentorship and character development. Teachers and learners will receive practical sustainability training designed to inspire purpose-driven education and future green careers.
Implementation will be overseen by a joint steering committee drawn from both organisations, supported by monthly monitoring and evaluation reports to track progress, measure impact, and guide scale-up decisions.
The partnership signals a growing private sector push to embed climate awareness early in Kenya’s education system. By combining HACO’s sustainability expertise with Nation Media Group’s nationwide education reach, the programme seeks to cultivate environmentally responsible citizens and spotlight emerging young climate champions.
Speaking during the signing, HACO Industries’ Managing Director underscored the company’s long-term vision: “At HACO, we believe sustainability begins with education. Through this initiative, we are intentionally investing in young people by equipping them with environmental knowledge, practical skills, and a sense of responsibility for the world they will inherit. When business, media, and education come together, we can nurture a generation that will drive Kenya’s sustainable future.”
The MoU will run for an initial one-year period, with provisions for renewal and potential nationwide expansion based on demonstrated impact. Both organisations will co-brand programme materials and jointly showcase milestones — a move expected to reinforce their shared commitment to building a more environmentally conscious and resilient Kenya.
