President William Samoei Ruto on Tuesday hosted senior United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party officials at State House, Nairobi, in a high-level meeting that underscored the fast-evolving political rapprochement between UDA and the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).
The meeting comes barely a day after ODM resolved to constitute a negotiating team to spearhead structured talks with UDA, a move widely seen as a decisive step toward formalising cooperation between President Ruto and ODM leader Raila Odinga ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Addressing the UDA National Executive Committee (NEC), President Ruto said the ruling party was putting in place “mechanisms for structured engagement with the ODM Party to deepen political cooperation, build consensus on shared priorities, and provide a clear framework for dialogue, coordination, and partnership.”
He noted that the objective of the talks is not only to consolidate the current political détente but also to strengthen stable governance and lay a solid foundation for a possible formal coalition arrangement ahead of the next general election.
“The objective is to strengthen the ongoing political partnership, support stable governance, and lay the foundation for a formal coalition arrangement ahead of the 2027 General Election,” the President said.
The State House meeting, presided over by President Ruto in his capacity as UDA Party Leader, also reviewed the party’s internal affairs, including progress made since its formation and the outcomes of the recently concluded grassroots elections. Party officials were briefed on organisational consolidation efforts and preparations for the next phase of political engagement.
Political analysts view the ODM–UDA talks as a potential game changer in Kenya’s political landscape, signalling a shift from adversarial politics toward elite consensus-building. Supporters argue the engagement could stabilise governance and ease political tensions, while critics warn it may blur ideological lines and weaken opposition oversight.
With ODM now formally setting up a negotiation team and UDA opening its doors to structured dialogue, all eyes are on the content, scope, and eventual outcome of the talks—talks that could decisively shape Kenya’s political alliances and electoral arithmetic heading into 2027.
