Governor Johnson Sakaja has once again defied the odds, emerging unscathed as over 72 Nairobi MCAs delivered a crushing blow to a desperate impeachment plot, declaring the motion “dead” and vowing to protect the city’s transformational leadership.
In a packed press conference at the County Assembly precincts on Wednesday, Majority Leader and Makongeni MCA Peter Imwatok, flanked by the full leadership of all House committees and Budget Chairman Wilfred Odalo, led a thunderous rejection of the scheme.
“We are very categorical — we will not impeach Sakaja. That motion is dead. Hakuna mahali utaenda!” the MCAs chanted in unison.
Imwatok didn’t mince words, branding the plotters “Wakora” whose move was nothing but an exercise in futility.
“How can we approve the Governor’s legal working arrangements on the Nairobi Regeneration Programme — bringing KSh80 billion to the people of Nairobi, twice the County Assembly budget — and at the same time support an impeachment against him?” he asked. “With such excellent cooperation and benefits to Nairobians, who in their right mind would push for this?”
The majority leaders made it crystal clear: Sakaja’s focus remains on delivering results — not political drama.
The failed bid was spearheaded by a small group of mostly Azimio-aligned MCAs led by South B’s Waithera Chege and a handful of UDA allies. On Tuesday, they claimed to have collected 22 signatures, citing alleged mismanagement and refusing to “rubber-stamp” the Sakaja regime.
But history repeated itself. The same faces pushed an identical impeachment last year — only for it to flop spectacularly.
This time, the overwhelming majority — including 15 UDA MCAs and 4 Wiper members — stood firm behind Sakaja, just 24 hours after the Assembly unanimously approved the landmark KSh80 billion national-county cooperation deal.
The message from City Hall was loud and unmistakable: Sakaja stays. The people of Nairobi win.
With the impeachment saga buried for good, Governor Johnson Sakaja can now press ahead uninterrupted — delivering cleaner streets, better services, and a regenerated capital city that works for every resident.
The people have spoken through their elected MCAs. Sakaja’s nine lives just got stronger. Nairobi’s development agenda rolls on — full speed ahead.
