Why Dr. Nicholas Kut K’Ochogo Could Be the Kingmaker in Siaya’s Deputy Governor Race

Why Dr. Nicholas Kut K’Ochogo Could Be the Kingmaker in Siaya’s Deputy Governor Race

By Samson Wire

The battle lines for the Siaya County gubernatorial contest are steadily taking shape—but beneath the high-voltage race for the top seat, a quieter yet potentially decisive political calculation is emerging. At the center of that arithmetic stands Dr. Nicholas Kut K’Ochogo.

Widely known in political and administrative circles simply as Dr. Kut, the seasoned mobilizer is increasingly being whispered about as the “equalizer” candidate for the coveted deputy governor slot.

Dr. Kut is no political lightweight. A former military command officer famed for his disciplined, scorched-earth mobilization style, he has built a reputation as a strategist who understands both the science and the street dynamics of politics.

Dr. Nicholas Kut K’Ochogo

Hailing from the populous Alego Usonga sub-county and born into the lineage of a colonial-era chief, Kut blends traditional influence with modern political organization—an uncommon mix that pundits say makes him a valuable running mate for any serious gubernatorial contender.

On the ground, his brand is already well defined. Residents affectionately refer to him as “Bazuu wa kusaidia wamama na vijana”—loosely translated as a dependable champion for women and youth.

So far, the Siaya gubernatorial race has attracted at least five aspirants, yet the deputy governor slot remains conspicuously under-contested. Notably, Dr. Kut K’Ochogo is the only figure who has openly positioned himself within that space.

The main gubernatorial hopefuls eyeing the ODM ticket include:

Eng. Nicholas Gumbo, former Rarieda MP and perennial gubernatorial contender

William Oduol, the current Siaya Deputy Governor, popularly known as “Denge”

George Okode, the County Assembly Speaker

Two additional aspirants running as independents and of course the incumbent James Aggrey Bob Orengo, if he decides to run.

With the top seat crowded, attention is quietly shifting to the strategic value of the deputy position—traditionally seen as ceremonial but increasingly pivotal in coalition building.

Political analysts argue that Kut’s greatest strength may lie in geography and numbers.

Siaya’s political chessboard has long revolved around regional balance. Should the governor emerge from Rarieda, logic would likely push the deputy slot toward the populous Alego Usonga—Kut’s home turf.

Similarly:

If Bondo clinches the governorship, the speakership could tilt to Rarieda

The Senate seat could rotate among Ugenya, Ugunja, or Bondo

Alego Usonga’s most realistic power stake, many argue, remains the deputy governor position

In that matrix, Dr. Kut’s name repeatedly surfaces.

Insiders within Siaya’s political circles suggest that Kut’s proximity to the grassroots, combined with his mobilization machinery, could make him an attractive running mate for whichever gubernatorial aspirant secures party backing.

“He brings numbers, structure and regional balance,” observed one local political pundit. “Any serious ticket will have to look in his direction.”

Even so, the wildcard remains William Oduol’s own gubernatorial ambitions, which could significantly reshuffle the Alego Usonga equation.

For now, Dr. Nicholas Kut K’Ochogo appears to be playing the long game—positioned, visible, and statistically compelling.

Whether he ultimately becomes Siaya’s political equalizer or remains a strong bargaining chip will depend on how the alliances crystallize in the months ahead.

One thing, however, is increasingly clear: in the intricate arithmetic of Siaya politics, Kut is a variable that serious contenders can ill afford to ignore.

Only time will tell.
