The County Government of Siaya, through its Department of Health, took a significant step in promoting menstrual hygiene and supporting girls’ education by donating sanitary pads to various schools in Central Gem. This noble initiative, presided over by Siaya County Assembly Health Chairman, Hon. Sylas Madingu, aims to empower the girl child by ensuring they have the necessary resources to manage their menstrual health with dignity.
The donation drive, which reached Nyawara Girls, Luri, Gongo, Kagilo, Siriwo, and Wagai Secondary Schools, is not just about providing essential hygiene products. It is a strategic move to enhance school retention rates among girls, who often miss classes due to a lack of menstrual hygiene products. By addressing this issue, the county government is helping bridge the gender gap in education and ensuring that girls have equal opportunities to excel academically.
Beyond education, this initiative plays a crucial role in tackling teenage pregnancies among adolescent girls. Studies have shown that when girls remain in school, they are less vulnerable to early pregnancies and forced marriages. By providing these sanitary pads, the Siaya County Government is not only safeguarding the dignity of young girls but also investing in their future.
Speaking during the event, Mr. Madingu emphasized the county’s commitment to promoting health and education as fundamental pillars for community development. He called upon other stakeholders, including NGOs and well-wishers, to join hands in supporting similar initiatives to ensure that no girl misses school due to lack of sanitary products.

As the County Government continues to roll out such impactful programs, the hope is that every girl in Siaya will have access to the resources they need to stay in school, pursue their dreams, and contribute positively to society. With continued support and awareness, menstrual hygiene will no longer be a barrier to education but a well-managed aspect of every girl’s life.
