In a subtle move that depicts the general political atmosphere in Western Kenya outspoken Kakamega Senator Boniface Khalwale has ditched the ruling United Democratic Alliance UDA Party for a relatively unknown UDM Party.
The move is significant, however, as it symbolizes a general shift of support by leaders from Western Kenya away from the ruling UDA Party.
Khalwale, a seasoned politician known for his fiery rhetoric, cited ideological differences as the primary reason for his departure.
His exit from UDA deals a significant blow to the party, which has been working to consolidate its influence in Western Kenya.
The Senator’s move to UPM is seen as a strategic step to align with like-minded leaders ahead of the next General Election.
Political analysts suggest that Khalwale’s defection could trigger a wave of realignments in the region.
The United Patriotic Movement (UPM) Party is relatively new but gaining traction as an alternative for leaders dissatisfied with the current political establishment.
Historically, Western Kenya has always politically put their eggs in the same basket with Nyanza and that meant massive support for ODM Party. Lately with UDA Party making inroads in Western Kenya and a fragmented approach with one half in government and the other half outside there’s been increasing uncertainty which direction the region will take in the next polls.
When Raila joined forces with Ruto the die appears cast and a new leadership is set to emerge from the region taking a different direction altogether. The seasoned Khalwale must have read into this script and is possibly positioning himself as the best next available alternative in 2027.
His departure raises questions about UDA’s ability to maintain unity amid rising dissent among its members.
Supporters of Khalwale have welcomed his move, describing it as a courageous stand for his principles.
Meanwhile, UDA leaders have downplayed the exit, insisting the party remains strong and focused on its agenda.
The coming months will reveal whether Khalwale’s gamble will pay off or further isolate him from mainstream politics.
As the political realignment continues, all eyes are on Western Kenya to see how this shift will reshape the region’s dynamics.
