The Ministry of Education has announced a reduction in fees across all academic programs in public universities.
In a notice to Vice Chancellors dated Wednesday, July 30, Higher Education Principal Secretary Beatrice Inyangala said the decision was arrived at following extensive consultations.
“Following extensive consultations with the public, students, and higher education stakeholders, the Government of Kenya is pleased to announce a landmark rationalization of public university fees based on the Student-Centred Funding Model.
“In direct response to concerns raised by students and their families, the Government has lowered fees payable by students across all academic programmes,” read the notice in part.
PS Inyangala directed all public universities to adopt the new fee schedule effective September 1, 2025.
The universities were also directed to update their admissions and finance portals to reflect the revised fees of academic programs
“Public universities are hereby directed to adopt the new fees schedule, effective 1st September, 2025 for first year as well as continuing students. All public universities are further directed to update their admissions and finance portals to reflect the revised fees of academic programs,” Inyangala stated.
Further, she said the cost of university programs will continue to be met through a combination of tuition fees, scholarships, and loans based on the needs of individual students.
“The Government remains steadfast in its vision to transform higher education as a cornerstone of national development. We count on your full cooperation to implement these financing reforms efficiently, equitably, and in the best interest of Kenyan students and families,” the Higher Education PS added.
In the new revision, the minimum school fees for a program in Medicine (Pre-Clinical) will cost KES 12,960 and a maximum of KES 51,840 per semester.
Clinical Medicine will cost between KES 22,371 and KES 75,000, Dentistry (Pre-Clinical) between Ksh12,960 and Ksh51,840, while Veterinary Medicine (Clinical) will cost between Ksh20,546 and Ksh75,000.
Architectural Studies program will cost between Ksh12,960 and Ksh51,840, while the Engineering Surveying programs will cost parents between Ksh14,256 and Ksh57,024 per semester.
On the other hand, programs in Business, Education, and Economics will cost between Ksh7,525 and Ksh30,101 per semester.
