A storm of speculation is brewing in Kenya following a rare meeting between ODM leader Raila Amollo Odinga and President Dr William Samoei Ruto at State House Nairobi—barely hours following another meeting at the same venue between Ruto and former President Uhuru Muigai Kenyatta.
Photos shared online on Friday evening showed Raila, Ruto, and Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi in a cordial and seemingly strategic conversation, prompting speculation about the direction of Kenya’s political alliances ahead of the 2027 elections.
Sources within State House confirmed that the meeting between Raila and Ruto was not a chance encounter. It was reportedly organized to review the progress of the March 2025 Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the Kenya Kwanza administration and ODM.
The MoU is believed to outline a broad-based cooperation framework, with a focus on governance, electoral reforms, fiscal discipline, and national unity.
An ODM insider who requested anonymity told Pulse that Raila reaffirmed his support for the Ruto administration, especially on matters of devolution and economic recovery.
“Baba made it clear that he’s not walking away from the arrangement. In fact, discussions are now shifting towards joint programs for 2026 and 2027,” the source said.
The meeting comes only hours after President Ruto hosted his predecessor, Uhuru Kenyatta, at State House during a high-level diplomatic summit on peace efforts in eastern DRC.
Uhuru, in his capacity as the EAC Facilitator of the Nairobi Peace Process, joined Ruto and other regional leaders, including Zimbabwe’s President Emmerson Mnangagwa, to harmonize EAC and SADC-led peace efforts in the DRC.
While the Uhuru meeting was strictly diplomatic, Raila’s visit carried political undertones, especially as it occurred in the wake of increasing speculation about a looming political realignment.
The back-to-back visits by two of Ruto’s former political rivals to State House within the same day have triggered debate online, with Kenyans wondering whether 2027 will feature a surprise joint ticket—or a broader coalition pact.
Observers say Raila’s appearance at State House signals a pragmatic approach to politics, as he consolidates his role in national affairs even while sections of his ODM base remain skeptical of his alliance with Ruto.
