Siaya County is stepping up its game in health and infrastructure development, with Ugenya Sub-county emerging as a key beneficiary of ongoing multimillion-shilling projects.
A high-level team from the Department of Public Works, Roads, Energy and Transport, led by Chief Officer Kevin Ajuul, conducted a site inspection on Wednesday, August 7. The delegation, which included Acting Roads Director Eng. Samuel Ogeda and Acting Public Works Director Eng. Tom Odero, visited several construction sites to assess progress and engage with local stakeholders.
Health Sector Transformation
Top of the agenda was the construction of a two-storey in-patient complex at Urenga Sub-County Hospital. The facility, which is rapidly taking shape, will host maternity and pediatric wards, surgical theatres, postnatal units, diagnostic laboratories, and imaging services.
“The substructure is nearly complete and we are pleased with the pace of the superstructure works,” noted Eng. Odero.
Once operational, the upgraded Urenga facility will serve as a key referral hospital in the region—significantly expanding access to specialized medical care.
At Bar Ndege Health Centre, the team also reviewed progress on a new outpatient block that aims to decongest services and improve healthcare access for residents of East Ugenya.
Road Network Enhancements
The inspection team then toured the Sega ring road, a key infrastructure component designed to ease traffic within the sub-county. Discussions also focused on proposed link roads that would connect the ring road to the Busia–Kisumu highway, creating better traffic flow and boosting trade across Ugenya.
“These roads will enhance mobility, open up the local economy, and improve service delivery,” said CO Ajuul.
A Strategic Development Agenda
The projects form part of Governor James Orengo’s broader development blueprint, which prioritizes healthcare and transport as pillars for inclusive growth and community transformation.
“Our focus is on impactful infrastructure that directly uplifts the lives of our people,” added Ajuul.
With tangible progress on the ground, residents of Ugenya are set to enjoy better services and stronger economic linkages in the near future.
