NAIROBI – The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) has issued a weather alert warning of increased rainfall intensity in several parts of the country from Tuesday, August 12, to Monday, August 18, 2025, with the likelihood of storms in some regions.
According to the weekly forecast, the Central Highlands (including Nairobi, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, and Kiambu counties), Western Kenya (Kakamega, Bungoma, Vihiga, and surrounding areas), and parts of North-western Kenya (notably Turkana and West Pokot) are set to experience heavy downpours accompanied by isolated thunderstorms.
“An increase in rainfall intensity is expected in several parts of the country, with isolated storms likely, especially in the Central Highlands, Western Kenya, and North-western Kenya,” read part of the KMD advisory.
Cold, Cloudy Days Ahead for Some Areas
The weatherman also projected intermittent cold and cloudy conditions throughout the week, especially in the Central Highlands, South-eastern Lowlands (Machakos, Makueni, Kitui), the Rift Valley highlands, and parts of Western Kenya. Such conditions are typical during the August cool season, often leading to reduced sunshine hours and lower daytime temperatures.
Temperature Extremes: Heat in the North, Chill in the Highlands
Daytime highs of above 30°C are expected in most of North-eastern Kenya (Garissa, Wajir, Mandera) and North-western Kenya, while residents in parts of the Central Highlands, Central Rift Valley, and areas near Mt. Kilimanjaro may experience chilly night-time lows dipping below 10°C.
Strong Winds Expected Along the Coast and Inland
The KMD has also cautioned that strong southerly to south-easterly winds exceeding 25 knots (about 46 km/h) will sweep across the Coast and Kenya’s territorial waters, posing potential hazards for small vessels and fishermen. Similar wind patterns are expected in the South-eastern Lowlands, North-eastern, and North-western Kenya, possibly causing blowing dust in dry areas and affecting visibility.
Nairobi and other urban centers prone to poor drainage, such as Kisumu and Mombasa, could see localized flooding if the predicted heavy rains materialize. Motorists are advised to exercise caution, while county governments have been urged to clear drainage systems to prevent waterlogging.
The Met Department has encouraged farmers in the affected regions to take advantage of the rains for planting short-season crops but to remain alert for storm warnings, which may be updated through KMD’s daily advisories.
