Residents of Siaya County have been urged to prepare for intermittent rainfall, thunderstorms, and high humidity levels in the coming days, with conditions expected to intensify towards the end of the month.
According to the weekly weather forecast issued by the County Director of Meteorology, Mr. Dominic Arodi, most parts of Siaya will experience rainfall ranging between 37.8mm and 146.9mm between Tuesday, August 19, and Monday, August 25, 2025. Wards in central, eastern, southern, and western Gem Sub-county are expected to be among the hardest hit, with rainfall levels projected to reach between 119.6mm and 146.9mm.
“The county should expect morning showers associated with lightning and thunderstorms, especially on Sunday and Monday,” said Mr. Arodi. “Afternoon and night showers will also be experienced in most regions during the same period. Residents are advised to stay alert to possible weather-related hazards.”
Daytime temperatures are expected to range between 23°C and 26°C, while nighttime temperatures will fall between 16°C and 19°C. The forecast also warns of moderate winds, particularly over Lake Victoria, throughout the week.
The Meteorological Department has issued an Amber warning, signifying potentially dangerous weather conditions. Residents are therefore urged to exercise caution and prepare adequately.
Regional Outlook
- Zones 1 & 2 (Yala, Wagai, Konya, Ugenya, Ugunja, Ukwala, Sigomere): Moderate rains are likely on Tuesday, Sunday, and Monday, with sunny intervals expected midweek.
- Zones 3, 4 & 5 (Siaya, Bondo, Ugenya, Rarieda, and surrounding areas): Showers and thunderstorms are likely over many places from Friday through Monday.
Advice to Farmers
The Ministry of Agriculture has advised farmers to take advantage of the rains by planting vegetables and fodder and ensuring livestock are protected from pests. Farmers are also encouraged to report any unusual conditions to agricultural or veterinary officers.
Health Advisory
The County’s One Health Program has cautioned residents to safeguard their health during the wet spell. Citizens are advised to:
- Ensure access to safe drinking water,
- Sleep under mosquito nets or use repellents,
- Maintain proper hygiene through regular handwashing,
- Safeguard documents and essential drugs from water damage, and
- Stay updated with real-time forecasts and advisories.
The Meteorological Department emphasized the importance of community preparedness as rainfall peaks around August 27, when heavier downpours are expected both day and night.
