Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has cautioned political leaders against interfering with the upcoming African Nations Championship (CHAN) quarter-final match scheduled for Friday at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.
Speaking during a press briefing in Murang’a, Murkomen assured Kenyans that security will be heightened as Harambee Stars prepare to face Madagascar in a high-stakes clash.
“I want to thank the National Police Service for doing a fantastic job to secure Kasarani on Sunday to ensure that we abide by the CAF rule. On Friday we will have a very big match, and I want to assure the citizens of Kenya that we will do the same in the upcoming game,” Murkomen stated.
Although he avoided mentioning names, Murkomen’s warning appeared to target former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, who is expected to arrive at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) on Thursday, August 21, after a trip to the United States.

“Any interference from political actors, both in the country and those who are coming in, will not be tolerated during this match. We want peace to prevail in our nation,” the CS warned.
Government Awaits CAF Directives
Murkomen further noted that the government is in close consultation with the Confederation of African Football (CAF) regarding security arrangements.
“We are waiting for directions from CAF, and once that is done, we will ask Kenyans again to support Harambee Stars, abide by the rules, and see how seamless it will be,” he said.
He urged fans to maintain unity and rally behind the national team, stressing that sports should not be overshadowed by political theatrics.
DCP Mobilizes Supporters for Gachagua’s Return
Murkomen’s remarks came a day after the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) unveiled plans to give its leader, Rigathi Gachagua, a grand reception.
In a statement on Monday, August 18, DCP Deputy Party Leader Cleophas Malala announced that thousands of supporters would converge at JKIA at 8 a.m. to receive the former DP.
According to Malala, Gachagua would then lead “a mother of all peaceful processions” from the airport to the Nairobi CBD before addressing a rally at Kamukunji Grounds.
Malala confirmed that the party had already notified Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja about the procession, urging the police to provide security instead of disrupting the event.
Warning of Protests if Arrested
The DCP deputy leader also warned the government against arresting Gachagua upon arrival, saying such a move would trigger mass protests that could disrupt the tournament.
“If you apprehend Rigathi Gachagua the following day, you will see demonstrations, and yet the Harambee Stars will be playing on Friday. If Gachagua is arrested, we will not be able to see the Harambee Stars play in the quarter-finals,” Malala cautioned.
The developments set the stage for a tense week as Kenya prepares to host one of its biggest continental football fixtures while political undercurrents threaten to overshadow the tournament.
