The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) will spearhead two landmark projects in Siaya County — the modernization of Siaya County Referral Hospital and the expansion of Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Stadium — following high-level talks between Defence CS Soipan Tuya and Governor James Orengo.

In a statement on Wednesday, KDF confirmed that the groundbreaking ceremony for both projects will take place in September.
“The stage is set for next month’s groundbreaking ceremony for the modernization of Siaya Referral Hospital and expansion of Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Stadium,” the statement read.
Hospital Upgrade: 500 More Beds for Siaya

The hospital modernization plan will see the construction of a new five-storey block, increasing bed capacity by 500. The move is expected to significantly boost healthcare access across the county.
“In partnership with Siaya County Government, the Ministry of Defence through KDF will deliver the new facility, making Siaya Level 5 Hospital one of the most advanced in the region,” KDF noted.
Stadium to Triple Capacity
On the sporting front, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Stadium will undergo a major facelift. The expansion will include new terraces and roofing, pushing its current 5,500 capacity to an impressive 20,000 seats — transforming it into a modern, multi-sport arena.
This Siaya deal mirrors similar KDF-led interventions in Nakuru County, where the Defence Ministry is completing stalled projects, including Afraha Stadium and a trauma center at Nakuru Teaching and Referral Hospital.
Governor Orengo hailed the Siaya projects as a “game-changer,” promising timely delivery and quality execution.
