Kakamega Governor FCPA Fernandes Barasa on Saturday commissioned the Akatsa SDA Solarised Water Project in Idakho North, Ikolomani Sub-County, marking another milestone in his administration’s drive to expand access to clean water.
The Governor joined the faithful for a morning service at Akatsa SDA Church before officially launching the 50,000-litre-a-day facility, which will serve more than 500 households in the surrounding villages.
The project is a joint initiative between the County Government and the Seventh-day Adventist Church, implemented under the County’s flagship Amatsi Khumuliango last-mile connectivity program. By using solar power, the system guarantees reliability and reduced costs, ensuring that even remote households access safe and sustainable water.
Governor Barasa praised the collaboration with the church, saying such partnerships accelerate grassroots development.

“Our priority is household connectivity. When families have direct access to safe water, we reduce disease, ease the burden on women and children, and uplift livelihoods,” he said.
The Governor also highlighted a series of ongoing water projects across Ikolomani Sub-County that are already transforming lives. In Idakho South, the Kilingili Water Project is set to serve 2,000 households and public institutions. In Idakho Central, four springs benefiting 200 households have been protected, while in Idakho East, the Mpaka and Makhokho Water Projects are supplying over 200 households combined. In Idakho North, the Mwikhomo and Shanabunga projects have also been finalised.
Collectively, these interventions underscore Barasa’s pledge to make water accessibility a cornerstone of his administration’s development agenda.
The event was attended by Members of the County Assembly led by Majority Leader Hon. Philip Maina and host MCA Hon. Gladys Mukongolo, alongside the County Executive and senior administrators.
