The Judiciary has been thrown into mourning following the death of Court of Appeal Judge, Justice Fredrick Ochieng Andago.
Chief Justice Martha Koome, in a statement released on Wednesday, September 17, confirmed the passing of the eminent jurist, describing him as a towering figure in Kenya’s legal fraternity whose contributions will remain etched in the country’s jurisprudence.
“On behalf of the Judiciary and the Judicial Service Commission, I convey with profound sadness the news of the passing of Hon. Justice Fredrick Ochieng Andago, Judge of the Court of Appeal of Kenya,” CJ Koome said.
“We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, colleagues, and the entire Judiciary during this time of great sorrow.”
Justice Ochieng, who joined the Bench in 2003 as a Judge of the High Court, served with distinction in multiple stations including Kitale, Kakamega, Kisumu, and at the Civil, Criminal, and Commercial & Admiralty Divisions in Nairobi. In 2022, he rose to the Court of Appeal, where he continued to shape the country’s commercial law jurisprudence and champion alternative dispute resolution.
At the time of his passing, Justice Ochieng was Chairperson of the Court Annexed Mediation Taskforce, a role in which he spearheaded the nationwide adoption of mediation as a practical and humane path to justice.
Before donning the judicial robes, Justice Ochieng built a stellar legal career spanning nearly two decades as an advocate of the High Court with Kaplan and Stratton Advocates.
Chief Justice Koome eulogized him as not only a scholar of the law but also a reformer whose work in commercial law and mediation will serve as a legacy for generations.
“We stand in solidarity with his family, friends, and the entire Judiciary community during this difficult period of mourning. We call for sensitivity and compassion as we share in this collective grief. May Hon. Justice Fred Ochieng’s soul rest in eternal peace,” she said.
