Siaya, Kenya — All roads lead to the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Stadium today as the county hosts the grand final of BingwaFest, where the winning football team will pocket KES 1 million, the biggest sporting prize ever awarded in Siaya.
Yesterday’s semi-finals set the stage with Asembo and Bondo United battling fiercely at the stadium, thrilling fans who packed the terraces. Today’s final promises to be even bigger, with thousands expected to stream into the state-of-the-art arena.
The stadium — complete with a lush pitch, modern terraces and a VIP pavilion — has become the pride of Siaya since its refurbishment. Governor James Aggrey Bob Orengo has linked its rise to his Nyalore manifesto, saying it proves sport can transform lives.
“This is more than a game,” Orengo told supporters earlier in the week. “When our young people win here, Siaya wins with them.”
BingwaFest has not only showcased football but also athletics, rugby and 3×3 basketball. Olympian Wiseman Were and track star Miriam Chebet shone in the athletics events, underscoring Nyanza’s dominance in sport.
For grassroots clubs, today’s million-shilling jackpot could fund kits, training and transport for seasons ahead, turning dreams into reality. The festival has also boosted local businesses, from hawkers to boda boda riders, who are cashing in on the surge of fans.
As the final whistle blows tonight, one team will lift the trophy and carry home a life-changing prize. But for Siaya, the bigger victory may already be won: a county united in pride, and youth who now see sport as a real pathway to opportunity.
