The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Party is navigating a new chapter. Following the recent passing of its iconic leader, Raila Amollo Odinga, the party’s Central Committee convened for its first meeting, signaling a commitment to continuity and a strategic approach for the future. The gathering, led by Secretary General Edwin Sifuna, focused on maintaining unity, honoring Odinga’s legacy, and laying the groundwork for the party’s upcoming activities.
The meeting underscored ODM’s commitment to stability. Key among the pronouncements was the reaffirmation of the party’s participation in the broad-based government arrangement with President William Ruto’s administration. This decision, guided by a ten-point agenda, indicates a desire for cooperation and a continued focus on national interests.
Perhaps the most significant development was the endorsement of Dr. Oburu Oginga, Raila’s elder brother, as the new acting party leader. The move is viewed as a calculated step to maintain cohesion within the party during a period of transition. The Governing Committee’s call for support and cooperation for Dr. Oginga suggests an intention to avoid internal strife and ensure a smooth handover. This demonstrates a focus on maintaining stability and honoring Odinga’s legacy.
While emphasizing stability, the ODM Party also addressed pressing financial concerns. Secretary General Sifuna, reading the statement on behalf of the NEC, highlighted the significant funds owed to the party under the framework of political party funding. He urged the government to fulfill its constitutional obligations, emphasizing that honoring Odinga’s legacy would be best demonstrated by settling the party’s financial obligations, allowing its programs to continue.
The meeting also outlined plans for memorial services honoring Raila Odinga, to be held across several counties, allowing millions of Kenyans to pay their respects. Additionally, the party confirmed that its 20th-anniversary celebrations will proceed as planned, providing an opportunity to further solidify party unity and solidarity.
The ODM Party is clearly entering a new phase. While honoring Odinga’s memory, the party is simultaneously taking steps to strengthen its foundation and clarify its priorities. The endorsement of Dr. Oginga as acting leader, coupled with the call for financial support and the ongoing commitment to the broad-based government, illustrates a strategy focused on stability, unity, and a pragmatic approach to the political landscape. This initial Central Committee meeting sets the tone for the months ahead and suggests a measured, considered approach to the party’s future.
