In a by-election defined by low turnout, high tension, and a crowded field of nine male contenders, Hon. Lilian Aketch emerged as the race’s most compelling story — not for the votes she received, but for the courage, clarity, and conviction she displayed from the moment she joined the contest.
She may have finished third from the bottom, but her spirited campaign and powerful concession statement have cemented her status as a rising force in Ugunja politics.
A Late Entry That Sparked an Electric Campaign
Hon. Aketch began her journey in late September, fully aware that she was joining the race late and with limited resources. Her original plan was to prepare for a full-scale run in 2027, but when she was unexpectedly offered a direct certificate, she chose courage over comfort.
“I made the bold decision to step up and face the challenge, standing firm and competing against nine men,” she stated.
For a first-time candidate, her campaign was remarkably organized, vibrant, and relentless. Her team worked day and night, turning a seemingly impossible mission into a credible and respected bid.
A Candid, Unfiltered Post-Election Truth
In her concession statement, Hon. Aketch did not shy away from addressing the political realities surrounding the by-election.
She noted that running under ODM would have shut her out at the nomination stage, claiming that:
“I would have been removed at the nomination stage, especially with the clear efforts from CS Wandayi to secure a place for his nephew Moses on the ballot.”
She also raised alarm over what she described as the lowest voter turnout in Kenya’s history, with 87% of Ugunja voters staying away — a statistic she believes signals deeper issues in the political system.
Her sharpest criticism was reserved for what she termed widespread bribery:
“Those who did vote were largely influenced by bribery, both on the night before and on election day itself… When money speaks, truth becomes silent.”
A Historic First — And a Moment of Pride
Despite the challenges, Hon. Aketch stood tall and unapologetic about the milestone she achieved:
“I stand tall as the first woman to contest for MP in Ugunja and the only woman among nine male candidates. That alone is a historic achievement deserving of recognition and celebration.”
Her boldness, composure, and principled stance have sparked admiration from supporters across the constituency and beyond.
Eyes Set Firmly on 2027
Even in defeat, Hon. Aketch’s message radiated hope, resilience, and a promise of an even stronger comeback.
“Let us re-energize, reorganize, and strategize. 2028 is ahead of us, and together, we will come back stronger, better, and more prepared. Ongee ringo.”
Her concession was not an ending — it was a declaration of intent.
A New Political Chapter Begins
Hon. Lilian Aketch may not have won the Ugunja by-election, but she won something just as important: visibility, respect, and a foothold in a political landscape long dominated by men.
Her 2027 bid is already being watched with keen interest, and if her performance in this by-election is any indication, Ugunja is yet to see the best of her.
She entered late, fought hard, spoke boldly, and exited with dignity — but the Hon. Aketch story is only just beginning.
