Dreams were soaring and mortarboards flying—until reality came crashing down.
A dramatic scene unfolded in Changamwe, Mombasa County, after detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Headquarters’ Serious Crime Unit (SCU), working alongside officers from the Commission for University Education (CUE), abruptly shut down a graduation ceremony organised by an unaccredited institution.
The event, hosted at Victory International Church, was already in full swing when officers arrived, acting on intelligence that an illegal graduation was underway. What began as a proud academic milestone quickly turned into a law enforcement operation, bringing the ceremony to an immediate halt.
When challenged to produce accreditation documents, the organisers and officials behind Menorah Training Institute and Dominion Mission Theological University Global (based in Ghana) came up empty-handed. None could present the mandatory approvals from CUE—casting serious doubt on the legitimacy of the qualifications being awarded.

Preliminary investigations revealed that Menorah Training Institute is only registered with the Technical and Vocational Education and Training Authority (TVETA) to offer courses up to diploma level. However, the graduation list told a far more troubling story.
Investigators discovered that five individuals were slated to receive master’s degrees, while seventeen others were listed for degree certificates—credentials the institution is neither licensed nor authorised to confer.
The revelations triggered immediate arrests. Taken into custody were Daniel Dela (President), John Kibet, Philomena Milano, Ann Ogola Owiti (board members), as well as Jason Oduor and Michael Ochieng. All are currently undergoing processing ahead of their arraignment in court.
As investigations continue, authorities have issued a stern warning to Kenyans to verify the accreditation status of institutions before enrolling. In the pursuit of education, shortcuts can be costly—and, as witnessed in Changamwe, dreams built on shaky foundations can collapse in an instant.
