Former Nairobi Governor and National Economic Development Party (NEDP) leader Mike Mbuvi Sonko has once again reminded Kenyans why his name never strays far from the headlines — this time by hosting his staff to a lavish end-of-year Christmas luncheon at one of Nairobi’s most exclusive dining venues.
Known for his flamboyance, philanthropy and quick response to human suffering, Sonko shocked and impressed many after treating party staff to a sumptuous high-end feast, a gesture supporters have hailed as rare, thoughtful and deeply human in Kenya’s political space.
The event comes barely weeks after the National Economic Development Party (NEDP) was officially registered, with Sonko and party officials receiving their certificate from the Registrar of Political Parties. In what political observers say may be a first of its kind, NEDP became the first newly registered political party to formally host and fete its staff ahead of Christmas.
Supporters and analysts alike have praised the move as a strong show of appreciation, inclusivity and people-centred leadership — values Sonko has long associated himself with.

Speaking during the event — which he also shared on his Facebook page — Sonko said the gathering was meant to reflect on the year’s journey and honour the sacrifices made by the party’s workforce.
“It was a moment to pause, appreciate, and celebrate the incredible team that has worked tirelessly throughout the year,” Sonko told staff.
He went on to commend the team’s dedication, sacrifice and belief in the party’s shared vision, noting that their commitment had been instrumental in firmly placing the young party on the national political map.
“As we head into the new year, we do so united, energized, and ready to serve our people with even greater commitment,” he added.
Born and bred in Mombasa, the flamboyant politician-cum-business mogul has built a reputation as a hands-on leader with a soft spot for the vulnerable, often stepping in during disasters and calamities to assist struggling Kenyans.
That same humanitarian streak was evident at the Christmas luncheon, reinforcing Sonko’s image as a leader who values people not just as supporters, but as partners in progress.
The luncheon comes amid growing visibility of NEDP across several regions, with party officials saying such engagements reflect Sonko’s emphasis on internal cohesion and grassroots-driven politics.
Political insiders believe the former Nairobi governor has officially placed himself on the 2027 political roadmap. For a man known to command massive nationwide support through bold actions rather than words, analysts say the political landscape is set to vibrate, alliances may shift, and long-standing political hills could soon “freeze” as Kenya edges toward a turbulent election season.
One thing is certain: when Sonko moves, Kenya watches — and with gestures like this, his journey to 2027 has clearly begun in style.
