British boxing superstar Anthony Joshua has been injured and rushed to hospital following a horrific road crash in Nigeria that claimed the lives of two people travelling in the same vehicle.
The former heavyweight world champion was a passenger in a Lexus SUV involved in a fatal collision on the busy Lagos–Ibadan Expressway on Monday morning. Local police confirmed that the vehicle slammed into a stationary truck near a petrol station, triggering a devastating impact that left two occupants dead at the scene.
Joshua, 36, is believed to have been seated behind the driver when the crash occurred. Emergency responders and members of the public rushed to the wreckage as crowds quickly gathered around the mangled vehicle, shattered glass scattered across the highway.
Dramatic images and videos circulating online show a visibly shaken Joshua being helped out of the wreck by concerned bystanders moments after the crash. Police officials said the boxer sustained injuries but was conscious and responsive when rescued.
Ogun State Police Commissioner Lanre Ogunlowo confirmed that Joshua and another survivor were taken to hospital for treatment, though details of their condition and the facility have not been disclosed.
Police spokesperson Oluseyi Babaseyi said:
“Two occupants died in the accident, while Anthony Joshua and one other person were rescued alive and taken to hospital where they are currently receiving treatment.”
Eyewitnesses told local media that the Lexus was travelling as part of a small convoy, with a second SUV carrying members of Joshua’s security detail following behind. According to witnesses, good Samaritans at the scene initiated rescue efforts before officials from the Federal Road Safety Corps arrived minutes later.
“The impact was severe,” one witness said. “The passengers seated beside the driver and beside Joshua did not survive. We did everything we could before emergency services arrived.”
The crash occurred in Ogun State, a region with strong personal ties to Joshua, who has family roots in the area. Authorities have launched investigations into the exact cause of the collision, including how the stationary truck came to be on the highway.
The tragic incident has sparked an outpouring of concern from fans around the world, as tributes continue to pour in for the two lives lost in the devastating accident.
As of Monday afternoon, police said Joshua remains under medical observation, with further updates expected once doctors complete their assessments.
