Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko is celebrating a major legal victory after the Court of Appeal cleared the way for him to access KSh537 million previously frozen in a corruption-related case dating back to 2019.
In a decisive ruling delivered by a three-judge bench comprising Justices Kathurima M’inoti, Chacha Mwita and Bryam Ongaya, the appellate court held that it lacked jurisdiction to grant a stay of execution against what it described as a “negative order” issued by the High Court. The decision effectively upheld an earlier ruling by High Court Judge Nixon Korir, which had ordered the unfreezing of Sonko’s bank accounts.
