Kenya’s journey toward a circular economy has gained fresh momentum after HACO Industries signed a strategic partnership with Mr. Green Africa aimed at strengthening post-consumer recyclate (PCR) collection and advancing sustainable manufacturing.
The collaboration will see the two firms roll out a structured take-back scheme aligned with Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) principles — a move expected to significantly improve plastic waste recovery across the country’s fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) sector.
Under the agreement, HACO will support the recovery of plastic packaging waste from the market, helping to curb environmental leakage while promoting responsible recycling. Mr. Green Africa, leveraging its established collection and recycling network, will aggregate post-consumer plastics and reintegrate them into the production value chain, while also supporting livelihoods within both informal and formal waste collection ecosystems.
The initiative reflects a growing shift by Kenyan manufacturers away from traditional linear consumption models toward circular systems that emphasize resource efficiency, environmental stewardship and community impact.
HACO Managing Director Mary-Ann Musangi said the partnership demonstrates how sustainability is fast becoming central to business strategy.
“Sustainability is increasingly becoming a core business imperative, requiring practical partnerships that translate environmental responsibility into measurable outcomes,” Musangi said.
“By embedding EPR principles into our operations, we are reinforcing our commitment to responsible production, waste accountability and long-term environmental resilience.”
For Mr. Green Africa, the deal underscores the importance of closer collaboration between recyclers and manufacturers in scaling Kenya’s recycling infrastructure. The company noted that such partnerships are essential for driving systemic change while unlocking economic opportunities for waste collectors and processors.
Beyond material recovery, the collaboration is expected to advance broader Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) goals by promoting sustainable consumption, enhancing traceability across the plastics value chain and supporting national efforts to reduce plastic pollution.
Industry analysts say the HACO–Mr. Green Africa alliance signals a broader transformation within Kenya’s manufacturing landscape — one where producers, recyclers and communities increasingly share responsibility for managing waste.
If successfully implemented at scale, the partnership could become a model for how Kenya’s FMCG sector tackles plastic waste while building a more resilient and inclusive circular economy.
