Siaya, Kenya — Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) leaders on Monday paid a courtesy call on Siaya Governor James Orengo at his Ugenya home, just days after his return from a month-long trip abroad.
Led by Secretary-General Collins Oyuu and Alex Dunga, the union officials expressed gratitude for the governor’s safe return and wished him good health as he continues steering the county through socio-economic challenges.
“We have come to pay you a visit as our leader, and we are indeed happy with your return,” Oyuu said.
Praise for School Feeding Programme

The KNUT leadership lauded Orengo’s administration for rolling out the fortified porridge school feeding programme, which they noted has boosted pupil enrolment and improved nutrition across public schools.
“The idea to introduce the school feeding programme was well thought out,” Oyuu remarked, adding that the initiative has enhanced retention and learning outcomes.
He further commended the Nyalore administration for absorbing Early Childhood Development (ECD) teachers on permanent and pensionable terms, saying it reflected the governor’s commitment to improving the welfare of trainers.
Orengo Reassures Teachers
Governor Orengo assured teachers of his government’s continued support and close working relationship.
“Teachers are key stakeholders of the Siaya County Government, and we drive the agenda of this government together,” he said.
He revealed that the county is investing in modern ECD infrastructure, with plans to construct model complexes in all six sub-counties.
“We started the construction of a model ECD complex in Bondo sub-county, which is now 80 percent complete. In the 2025/2026 budget, we have prioritised a similar project in South East Alego ward,” Orengo announced.
Strategic Education Plan
County Executive Committee Member for Education, Dr. Edgar Otumba, disclosed that the county has partnered with organizations including Safaricom Foundation to equip the new ECD facilities.
According to the county’s Education Strategic Plan, Siaya intends to recruit 450 ECD teachers and 20 instructors, while 705 ECD centres will be supplied with new learning materials.
Dr. Otumba added that the department is finalising several policies, including the Widows Social Protection Bill, the Youth Development Policy, the Siaya County Children Policy, and a Policy on Prevention and Response to Sexual and Gender-Based Violence.
