A Florida mother has fatally shot her two young children before turning the gun on herself in their upscale Lakewood Ranch home. The tragedy unfolded while her husband was on a business trip, leaving a gated community stunned.
Monika Rubacha, 44, is accused of the violent killings of her son Josh James, 14, and daughter Emma James, 11. Authorities say she executed the murders in separate rooms, with evidence suggesting Josh may have been slain first.
The $1.7 million residence in Manatee County’s exclusive Lake Club became a crime scene Thursday evening after Rubacha’s husband, Richard James, requested a welfare check. Unable to reach his family for over a day from South America, he alerted police.
Deputies arrived to a “violent scene” marked by traumatic injuries. “Right away you could tell something wasn’t right,” said sheriff’s spokesman Randy Warren. “There were signs of homicidal violence.”
Investigators confirmed no one else was involved, noting “a level of planning” in the act. The family had relocated from Missouri three years ago, with no prior red flags at the address.
Neighbors reeled in disbelief. “It’s a total surprise and shock. This neighborhood is so quiet,” resident Paul Henne told reporters. The incident has sparked discussions on social media, with users expressing heartbreak over the “unimaginable nightmare.”
Richard James learned of the horrors upon returning home. “It’s an incredibly emotional day for him,” Warren added. The probe continues, as questions linger over what drove Rubacha to such depths.
