K’Ogalo Leapfrog Leopards to Finish First Leg Top of SportPesa Premier League
Gor Mahia delivered a statement performance on Sunday, dismantling Mara Sugar 3-0 at Nyayo National Stadium to reclaim top spot in the SportPesa Premier League and complete the first leg as leaders.
The record 21-time champions moved level on 33 points with rivals AFC Leopards but surged ahead on superior goal difference, dislodging Ingwe after their dramatic late win over APS Bomet on Saturday.
Under pressure to respond, Charles Akonnor’s side showed ruthless efficiency despite missing suspended midfielder Enock Morrison and injured forward Ben Stanley Omondi.
Akonnor made two changes from the team that beat Murang’a Seal, handing Jackson Dwang his first start of the season in midfield in place of Fidel Origa, while Ebenezer Adukwaw led the attack instead of Samuel Kapen.
Mara Sugar, who arrived with an impressive away record, made three alterations from their draw against Kenya Police: Samuel Imbusia replaced David Omondi, Ainea Ndette came in for Dennis Cheruiyot, and Nassor Shikokoti started in central defence ahead of Drona Langa.
Gor Mahia controlled proceedings from the outset, clinically converting chances to secure a comfortable victory that ended Mara Sugar’s strong run on the road. The sugar millers drop to 13th place heading into Round 18.
