A wave of chilling violence has gripped Siaya County, with gangsters targeting vulnerable night watchmen in a series of savage attacks that have left two men dead and communities living in fear.
In the latest gruesome discovery, the mutilated torso of a man believed to be a private security guard was found dumped on the banks of a stream in Ndori, Siaya County. Police recovered the body along with a severed piece of hand, but the head, both arms, and legs remain missing. Authorities suspect the victim was killed elsewhere before his remains were callously discarded in the waterway.
The deceased was clad in trousers and a belt bearing the insignia of a private security firm, leading investigators to believe he was a night watchman. “We are yet to establish the motive or positively identify the victim,” a police source said. Officers are combing the surrounding area in a desperate search for the missing body parts as part of their ongoing probe. The torso has been transferred to the mortuary pending further investigations and autopsy.
A day earlier, on February 15, another horrific incident unfolded in Ugunja, Siaya County. Armed assailants broke into the offices of Watu Credit Company through the rear door and brutally murdered night guard Sylivester Ojwang, 45. The gang hacked the victim in the head after he reportedly resisted their intrusion, leaving him dead at the scene.
The attackers made off with six motorbikes parked at the facility in what appears to have been a calculated robbery. Ojawang’s body was moved to the mortuary for autopsy, and police say they are pursuing promising leads, though no arrests have been made so far.
These back-to-back killings have sparked alarm over the rising threat to night watchmen, who often work alone and unarmed in isolated locations. Residents and security experts fear organized gangs are preying on these low-paid guardians of businesses and properties during the cover of darkness.
Police have appealed for anyone with information to come forward, vowing intensified patrols and crackdowns on criminal elements in the region. “We will not rest until those responsible are brought to book,” authorities stated.
As Siaya grapples with this surge in targeted violence, questions loom about safety measures for night security personnel and the need for stronger community vigilance to combat these ruthless gangs.
The incidents highlight a disturbing pattern of insecurity in parts of Siaya County. Anyone with information is urged to contact the nearest police station or the anonymous Crime Stoppers line.
