Mining CS Hassan Joho announces public commemoration for Baba’s enduring legacy — just weeks after President Ruto’s moving moment of silence
Mining Cabinet Secretary Omar Hassan Joho has announced he will personally lead a public commemoration this Wednesday to honor what would have been former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s 81st birthday.
The event celebrates “Baba” at 80+1, highlighting a lifetime of resilience, sacrifice, and transformative leadership that continues to inspire generations of Kenyans.
In a heartfelt statement released Monday, Joho described the gathering as a powerful moment to reflect on Raila’s extraordinary journey.
“This Wednesday, we will come together to honour and celebrate Baba Raila Amollo Odinga @80+1,” Joho declared. “His journey teaches us that resilience is not the absence of struggle but the courage to walk through it with purpose.”
The Cabinet Secretary emphasized how Raila’s trials forged his unbreakable spirit and ignited courage in millions who followed him.
He added that Raila’s vision lives on through those he mentored: “His vision did not end with him — it took root in the minds and hearts of those he guided. In us, his ideals continue to breathe, reminding us that true leadership is measured not by years but by the generations it awakens.”
The announcement comes amid ongoing national reflection on Raila Odinga’s monumental legacy, following President William Ruto’s poignant tribute during the Jamhuri Day celebrations on December 12.
At the packed stadium, Ruto called for a minute of silence in remembrance of the iconic leader.
“I now respectfully urge all of us to join me in observing a one-minute silence in honour and remembrance of the honorable Raila Amolo Odinga and honour his sacrifice, service, and enduring legacy,” the President said.
The crowd fell silent for several seconds as Ruto praised Raila as a champion of freedom, justice, and unity.
“Raila devoted his life to the pursuit of freedom, justice, and peaceful co-existence,” Ruto stated. “His courage, resilience, and unwavering belief in the power of the people shaped defining chapters of our national story and inspired generations to believe that change is possible.”
Wednesday’s commemoration promises to unite Kenyans once again in celebrating one of the nation’s most influential figures — a man whose fight for democracy and equality continues to shape Kenya’s future.
