Kericho Mass Graves Mystery Deepens: DCI Hunts for Truth as Mutilation Claims Ignite National Outrage

A quiet cemetery in the heart of Kericho town has become the epicenter of a chilling national mystery after reports surfaced of 14 unidentified bodies secretly buried in a single mass grave – some allegedly mutilated – without any official permission or paperwork.

What began as a routine late-night operation has spiraled into allegations of a brazen cover-up, with residents, officials, and human rights groups demanding answers: Were these unclaimed corpses legitimately transferred, or is something far more sinister at play?

The saga unfolded in the early hours of March 20 at Makaburini Cemetery, a facility owned by the National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK). According to eyewitness accounts from two casual laborers hired for the job, a white government-registered Land Cruiser arrived under cover of darkness. Three masked individuals paid the young men Sh2,000 each to dig one large pit. They then unloaded sealed body bags containing what the diggers estimated as 14 corpses – some showing visible injuries – before covering the grave and vanishing into the night.

The workers, gripped by suspicion, reported the incident to police the following day. By Sunday, March 22, the cemetery was swarming with armed officers. The site remains cordoned off, guarded around the clock.

Preliminary investigations by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Homicide Directorate point to 13 unclaimed bodies released from Nyamira County Referral Hospital last Friday, following a magistrate’s court order to clear mortuary congestion. Nyamira officials confirmed the release, noting public notices had been issued in February due to the absence of a local public cemetery.

Yet the burial process bypassed every standard protocol: no burial permits, no notification to Kericho police, county authorities, cemetery owners, or local administrators. Kericho East Deputy County Commissioner Kibe Maguta expressed disbelief: “Standard procedure requires documentation and coordination with relevant agencies – none of that happened here.”

Kericho Governor Erick Mutai echoed the outrage, declaring the county had made no arrangements to serve as a burial ground for neighboring regions. “This has come as a complete shock,” he said, calling for transparent, daylight exhumation to rule out any tampering.

Adding fuel to the fire, NGO Vocal Africa has alleged this is no isolated incident. The group claims additional suspicious burials at the same cemetery: nine bodies last month and as many as 42 late last year – potentially totaling over 60 secret interments from Nyamira. “This matter runs deeper than one grave,” said Vocal Africa’s Fredrick Odhiambo. “Kenyans deserve full transparency from security agencies.”

DCI detectives, led by Homicide Director Martin Nyuguto and Kericho County Police Commander Kivinda Kilonzo, have taken personal command. A white Land Cruiser believed to have transported the bodies has been impounded for forensic examination. The cemetery caretaker is reportedly detained, and investigators are questioning hospital staff, drivers, and escorts involved in the Nyamira transfer. A photocopied court order found during a search authorized only seven burials – raising fresh questions about authenticity and scale.

Forensic teams stand ready. On March 23, authorities plan to file for exhumation orders, transferring any remains to Kericho County Referral Hospital mortuary for post-mortem examination, cause-of-death determination, and possible identification.

Local leaders and residents are not waiting quietly. Area MCA Paul Chirchir demanded clarity: “Who authorized this? Where exactly did these bodies come from?” Fears swirl of links to missing persons cases, extrajudicial killings, or even rising cult activities in the region.

As Kenya grapples with this macabre revelation, the Kericho mass grave probe has ignited widespread calls for accountability. With exhumation imminent and detectives digging deeper, the dead may soon speak – and the answers could shake public trust to its core.

The nation watches intently. In a country already scarred by disappearances and unexplained deaths, silence is no longer an option.
