Narok Senator Ledama Olekina has thrown his hat into the ring for the influential Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Secretary General position, declaring himself the right candidate to steady the party amid mounting internal tensions.

In a candid interview, Olekina said he is ready to serve in any capacity but made clear the Secretary General’s office is where he can make the greatest impact. He cited his loyalty, experience, and communication skills as key assets at a time when ODM is undergoing a delicate political transition.

His bid comes against the backdrop of a high-stakes disciplinary showdown involving current Secretary General Edwin Sifuna. The Nairobi Senator faces accusations of misconduct, including publicly contradicting party positions on a controversial cooperation framework with the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) led by President William Ruto.

The dispute has exposed deep fissures within ODM as it recalibrates its identity—from a traditionally hardline opposition outfit to a party edging closer to governance. Party leadership, now under Acting Leader Oburu Oginga, has signaled a shift toward pragmatic engagement, a move critics say risks diluting its core ideals.

Sifuna, who has held the powerful post since 2018, has pushed back, positioning himself as a defender of ODM’s opposition roots. But party insiders accuse him of undermining unity at a critical moment. A disciplinary process is now underway, with a formal response deadline set for April 8 and a hearing slated for April 10.

Olekina, sensing an opening, has framed his candidacy as part of a broader push to modernize the party. He has also sparked debate by dismissing ethnic balancing in leadership appointments, arguing that merit—not tribe—should guide ODM’s decisions.

“The idea that leadership must rotate along regional lines is mediocrity,” he said, calling for a break from entrenched political norms.

The Secretary General role—central to ODM’s operations—oversees nationwide coordination, party messaging, and implementation of top decisions. It is widely seen as the engine room of the party, making the unfolding contest one of the most consequential in ODM’s recent history.

Olekina, an outspoken and media-savvy legislator, has built a reputation as a loyal ally of the party’s leadership and a vocal advocate for reform. His supporters argue he represents the fresh energy ODM needs ahead of the 2027 elections, while critics question whether sidelining dissenting voices like Sifuna could deepen internal divisions.

As ODM navigates this turbulent moment, the battle for Secretary General is shaping into more than a personnel change—it is a referendum on the party’s future direction.

With deadlines looming and tensions rising, all eyes are now on Sifuna’s response—and whether Olekina’s merit-driven pitch will carry the day in a party long shaped by both loyalty and political calculus.
