In a vibrant display of youth empowerment and economic transformation, President William Samoei Ruto today presided over the disbursement of KSh 220 million in non-repayable start-up capital under the highly acclaimed National Youth Opportunities Towards Advancement (NYOTA) programme at Jomo Kenyatta International Stadium in Kisumu.

The event saw 8,820 young beneficiaries from Kisumu, Siaya, and Homa Bay counties receive direct funding to kickstart or scale their businesses, marking a major milestone in the government’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda. President Ruto emphasized that NYOTA goes beyond mere financial aid—it’s a strategic investment in Kenya’s greatest asset: its youth.

“This is more than money; it’s fuel for dreams, resilience, and innovation,” the President declared, echoing sentiments from beneficiaries and leaders present. The initiative targets unemployed and aspiring entrepreneurs, providing catalytic grants—often around KSh 22,000 to KSh 50,000 per beneficiary—to overcome the critical barrier of access to start-up capital. Nationwide, NYOTA aims to support hundreds of thousands through skills training, enterprise grants, apprenticeships, and job placements, with previous phases already rolling out in regions like the North Rift and Kisii.

The launch drew dignitaries including Dr. William Oduol, among key figures championing President Ruto’s vision in Nyanza. Present were notable proponents of the President’s empowerment campaign in the region—such as Oburu Oginga, Gladys Wanga, Samuel Atandi, William Oduol, Energy CS Opiyo Wandayi, and Interior PS Raymond Omolo— who all aligned with the momentum, underscoring growing support for Ruto’s transformative agenda in what was once considered opposition stronghold.

President Ruto also highlighted complementary flagship initiatives, including the Affordable Housing Programme, which continues to deliver dignified homes, create jobs, and uplift communities across Kenya—including targeted projects in Nyanza like Kisumu’s Kanyakwar and Lumumba schemes. These efforts, combined with NYOTA, aim to build sustainable livelihoods, generate employment, and drive inclusive growth.

To the beneficiaries, the President urged discipline and innovation: “Nurture this seed with hard work. Let your enterprises create jobs, uplift families, and spark regional economic change.”

As Kenya pushes toward a more equitable future, today’s event in Kisumu stands as a powerful testament to Ruto’s commitment to youth-led prosperity. The NYOTA programme, backed by partnerships including World Bank support, continues to gain acclaim for bridging education, skills, and opportunity—proving that empowering entrepreneurs is the true path to national wealth creation.
